Nidhogg: An Experimental Side-Scrolling Fighting Game for Two Players

Nidhogg is a side-scrolling fighting game for two players developed and published by Messhof. The game is set in a pixelated world where players compete in fencing. Despite its simple concept and controls, the game is highly competitive, and many media outlets consider it to be one of the best multiplayer experiences ofNidhogg takes inspiration from the 1984 game "Great Swordsman" and uses GameMaker: Studio for development. The game draws its name from the Norse serpent Níðhöggr, which appears in the game and eats the winner of the duel.

Players control two game models that differ only in color and can jump, move, slide, and throw their sword at their opponent. Attacks can be made at three different heights: high, medium, and low. Disarm your opponent by hitting their sword, forcing them to pick it up again. The main objective is to reach the end of the enemy's territory, with the first player who accomplishes this being declared the winner. Nidhogg offers four different levels available for solo, local, and online multiplayer, with new modes added later, including a tournament and the ability to use weapons differently.
