Indie sword fighting action game

Nidhogg is an indie action game where two players engage in a fencing tug of war to earn a place in the Nordic afterlife. Two stick figures battle with swords and fists across multiple sections requiring thought and daring.

One on one

Take to the arena and battle for your place in Nidhogg, a game which at first glance looks like a 1980's classic. Two stock colour fighters use stick-like swords to fence their way to victory, taking ground and moving towards their goal in a tug of war where a death is just a setback. The combat on offer is based around blocking and outmanoeuvring your opponent. Attacks can be blocked and reversed, making calm and rational play the best way to win over a rash opponent. Extra moves like throwing swords, ducking, jumping and physical punches make up enough variety to keep Nidhogg fresh for a while but the lack of extra modes limit its lifespan. The online multiplayer is effectively dead making local play the only real option. A basic story mode is available but it is severely limited.

Short fun

Nidhogg is a decent enough little game. Realistically, there is only a few hours of gameplay available but, with a friend, that should be enough.

Epic award-winning fencing tug-of-war, full of graceful acrobatics and clumsy stabs

IRL yelling and excitement may occur, in this ultimate two-player showdown of fast-paced fencing and melee attacks.

Beware, advantages in Nidhogg are often fleeting, as new opponents continually spawn in your way. Use a variety of fencing maneuvers while armed -- lunges, parries, and even dirty tricks like throwing your sword. If swordless, press forward with punches, sweep kicks, dive kicks, rolls, and wall jumps.

The combat arena stretches in both directions, although besting an opponent only gains you ground. Matches aren’t won or lost with a single kill, but with a series of kills granting you right-of-way to run/fight/flee to your own goal-zone.

Each arena holds different strategic formations and chokepoints to use to your advantage. Until you reach your goal-zone, anything is possible. Only one thing is certain in Nidhogg… the only way to win is to outwit your opponent. En Garde!
